Diversity and dialogue
Accepting diversity is a milestone to achieve peace not only between but also
within nations. We need to perceive diversity as a source of enrichment, rather
than a threat to our own way of living. On a positive note, the age of grand
ideologies imposing “uniformity” on our way of living has came to an end.
Recognizing differences, however, should not lead to creating barriers between
“us” and “them” ; or hierarchical relations between different walks of life. Therefore,
we also need to foster dialogue and mutual understanding.
The panelists in this session are invited to contribute to an interactive debate on
the following questions:
- What are the major obstacles in embracing diversity within and between
societies?
- Ways to address negative stereo-typing, gross generalizations and misconceptions;
- What are the fallbacks of ongoing attempts at fostering political and cultural
dialogue between different walks of life? What are the roles of the states and
civil societies in furthering dialogue?,

Curbing appeal to terrorism and violent extremism
Terrorism is one of the most dangerous forms of violence. Its reach is across the
globe. It indiscriminately targets innocent people. Terrorism not only inflicts pain,
but also creates a vicious circle of hatred, intolerance and polarization; and
accordingly destroys social cohesion. Increase in the number of terrorist acts as
well as violent extremism is a source of growing concern. Along with ethnic terrorist
groups such as the PKK and ETA and activities of groups/individuals inspired by the
Al Qeada narratives, a particularly troubling development is the rise of extreme
right violence in Europe.
Irrespective of its pronounced political goals, any act of terrorism should be
denounced and countered by the international community. However, security
measures alone are insufficient to terminate this form of violence. Societies also
need to contemplate on the ways to curb the appeal to terrorism and extremism
; as well as the use of violence. Science is a powerful tool in our efforts to understand
and defy this scourge.
The panelists in this session are invited to share their ideas on the following questions:
- How are terrorists groups able to create pool of sympathizers and potential
militants and to make them to embrace violence? What kind of narratives and
methods they use?
- How can we counter such narratives and curb appeal to terrorism?
- What are the roles of civil societies in these efforts?
