Neset Gunal

11 October - 01 December 2012

Is Sanat Kibele Art Gallery is hosting of the greatest painters, Neset Gunal in the first exhibition of the 2012-2013 season. One of the most important representatives of figurative drawing in Turkey, Neset Gunal’s portraits and patterns, created from 1946 to 2001, will be shown this retrospective exhibition.

With his excellent patterns, impeccable compositions and power of expression, Neset Gunal is regarded as one of the greatest classics of today’s Turkish paint. As he tackles the problem of cultural identity in his paintings from the very beginning, Gunal also ranks among the rare masters that reach universality form locality.

Great mastery that spans from locality to universality

Neset Gunal drew attention with portrait paintings. During this early period his passion was to put on paper what he saw. His early paintings were close to Léopold Lévy’s spirit. His reductive sense for color made him use the pattern as constituent element and color as auxiliary element. Lévy found Gunal’s patterns very powerful. He lauded his works and even encouraged him by saying “at this age even Rafael would draw this much”.

At the end of the 1950’s, the people of Anatolia became indispensible for Gunal’s paintings. The use of Anatolia as an artistic theme became a major topic depicting the increasing migration from village to town also bringing the Anatolian village to artists’ attention. Gunal created works that reveal “people of soil”, Anatolia’s rough living conditions as well as its interfile and bare geography.

Neset Gunal increased the dramatic effect in his paintings with the series “Kapi Onu”, “Duvar Dibi” and “Cocuklar” which became his signature works in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The master painter drew attention with his lyric drawing of Anatolian people, living under rough conditions, on bare lands. The Anatolian reality which Gunal portrayed with “people of soil” is interpreted as the artist’s statement to social contradictions.
